How to Clean Stains off Fabric Blinds

Whether it was a renegade drink on the window sill or a general buildup of dust and dirt, stains on fabric blinds are, unfortunately, more common than we’d care to admit. Luckily though, cleaning them is a fairly straightforward task. Let’s take a look at how you can clean your blinds in 2023.

What style of blinds are you cleaning?

There are a variety of different styles of fabric blinds, so it makes sense to first look at what you have, as this might impact how you clean it. For example, if you have vertical blinds, you will be able to remove each slat for a more thorough cleaning. Roller blinds, on the other hand, don’t have this benefit. Acknowledging this, we’ll be showing you how to clean both styles.

The easiest way to clean roller blinds

You don’t need a specialist roller blind cleaner to remove dirt from your roller blinds – put your fancy gadgets to the side – the process is actually quite simple. Firstly, get your vacuum cleaner and fit the upholstery attachment to it (for the uninitiated, this is the attachment that has a bristly head). Once you’ve done this, gently vacuum your roller blind once it’s fully extended to remove dust and dirt.

Finally, once you’ve finished cleaning your roller blind, be sure to leave the blind extended until it’s fully dry. This will help combat mould buildup.

The easiest way to clean vertical blinds

As we mentioned earlier, you can clean your vertical blinds more easily by removing them first, which is a bonus. However, if you’re looking to do a more basic clean, you can follow the steps above by attaching the upholstery tool to your vacuum cleaner and removing dust and dirt while the slats are still attached.

For a more thorough clean, you will want to remove each slat individually and place them somewhere you don’t mind getting wet. The easiest way to do this, given the length of the slats, is to place them in your bathtub. Make sure the water you use isn’t too hot, though, as this could actually melt the adhesive, which keeps the weights at the bottom of each slat attached to the fabric.

Once the slats have been carefully placed in the bathtub, you can take a clean, damp cloth and gently run it along each slat. This will help you remove more stubborn stains. Be careful to avoid more vigorous scrubbing, as this can cause threads and scuffs.

When you have finally cleaned each slat to your liking, you can give them a rinse in lukewarm water and dab any excess with a towel. Once removed, hang each panel out to dry before putting them back on their rail.
