Are window, plantation, colonial, indoor, interior and wooden shutters all the same thing?

Essentially, yes! They are just different terms attached to the shutters that we supply and install.

Awnings

What awning operation systems are available?

Fraser James Blinds offer manual and electric operation awnings to suit everyone’s requirements.

Do awnings add value to your home?

The simple answer is yes because a good quality awning will offer several advantages to your home and outdoor space, including improved curb appeal, increased usable garden space, and an added extension to your home.

How much is an awning?

The cost of an awning will vary depending on model and specifications, and you can determine how factors like size, operation methods and lighting impact prices on the individual product pages of our website.

Do I need a full cassette, semi cassette or open awning?

These descriptions refer to how protected the mechanism and roller are when you’re not using the awning. The type of awning you decide to purchase depends on the type of property you’ll be installing it on and the level of protection the awning will have as a result. We can advise which products are suitable for your design and budget.

  • OpenOpen awnings have an exposed roller and mechanism, but you may want to incorporate a top cover for added protection, especially if you are prone to frequent or unpredictable bad weather in your area. Open awnings will still provide the same level of sun protection as other types of awnings and will still be of the same high-quality standard.
  • Semi Cassette: If you have a more sheltered garden or patio, a semi-cassette awning may be sufficient for your needs. A semi-cassette awning is ideal for most situations, delivering a medium level of protection from weather damage and general wear and tear from the elements due to it having half of a cassette which sits above the roll of fabric.
  • Full Cassette: This type of awning delivers the highest level of protection from the elements, as the roller and the whole arm mechanism are enclosed when the awning is retracted. This shields the whole system from the elements, including heavy rain, and from dirt that can accumulate.

We also offer a guide to the different types of awnings here.

Do Awnings offer all-weather protection?

Your awning is primarily used for sun protection. Still, it will also offer a degree of all-weather protection dependent on model and fabric choice.

  • Wind: Fraser James Blinds advise all motorised awnings are fitted with wind sensors. These will retract the awning if wind speed reaches a level that threatens the integrity of the product. However, please note that any safety sensor is a backup support device and should not be depended on. It is essential to exercise due diligence and retract the awning yourself, when possible, in windy conditions.
  • Rain: Standard folding arm patio awnings and their fabrics are showerproof but not completely waterproof. Providing the awning is fitted at an angle of 14 degrees or more, rainwater will run off the front profile offering excellent protection from showers. Nevertheless, standard folding arm awnings should be retracted if threatened by heavier rain. The excessive weight of water pooling on the cover may cause the fabric to stretch.
  • Snow: Awnings have little or no snow-loading capability and should be retracted when snow is forecast or falling.
